The hospital world is full of jargon, acronyms and complicated medicines and treatments that baffle even the wisest health care consumer. However, if you’re going to join hospitals on this journey, it would be helpful if you could “speak a little bit of the language.” Listed below are links to a hospital directory, a list of terminology, etc.

Health care definitions and acronyms

Infection, Nosocomial
Infection acquired during hospitalization that is neither present nor incubating at the time of hospital admission.
Infection Control Committee
Hospital committee composed of infection control personnel and medical, nursing, laboratory, and administrative staff members (and occasionally others, such as dietary or housekeeping staff members) whose purpose is to oversee infection control activities.
Informed Consent
Legal concept requiring a patient or a patient’s guardian to be advised of and to understand the risks associated with a proposed procedure or treatment prior to approving such procedure or treatment, usually indicated by a signed written statement.
Informed decision-making
A process designed to help patients understand the nature of the disease or condition being addressed; understand the clinical service being provided including benefits, risks, limitations, alternatives and uncertainties; consider their own preferences and values; participate in decision-making at the level they desire; and make decisions consistent with their own preferences and values or choose to defer a decision until a later time.
Inpatient
Person who receives medical, dental or other health-related services while lodged in a hospital or other health care institution for at least one night.
