There are a number of websites that offer information on hospital quality and patient safety. These are important places for patients and their families to go to begin their research on a hospital; however, individuals should not use just one tool to select a hospital. These sites should be used in conjunction with the advice from your doctor, your own experiences, the questions you’ve asked, etc.
Probably the most comprehensive list of hospital quality measures is Hospital Compare, the web site hosted by the Agency that oversees the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Listed below is a link to this site, as well as some sites that offer information focused specifically on Alabama's hospitals.
Alabama Department of Public Health
This link takes you to the Alabama Department of Public Health's website, which posts hospital-specific information on infections. The annual infection reports highlight how Alabama’s hospitals compare with each other and the nation on central line blood stream infections, catheter-associated urinary tract infections and specific surgical site infections.
This site provides information on hospitals nationwide, except for certain specialized facilities. It shows how well hospitals carry out certain processes of care, how they rate in terms of outcomes, how they communicate with patients and how well they prevent adverse events.
